Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires that all persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of appliances that contain ozone-depleting refrigerants be certified in proper refrigerant handling techniques. This course will prepare students, apprentices, and technicians for all four sections of the EPA Section 608 examination. (Core, Type I, Type II, Type III.)

EPA 608 Technician Certification Course - Core

The Core contains 25 general knowledge questions relating to stratospheric ozone depletion, rules and regulations of the Clean Air Act, the Montreal Protocol, refrigerant recovery, recycling and reclaiming, recovery devices, substitute refrigerants and oils, recovery techniques, dehydration, recovery cylinders, safety, and shipping. Type I contains 25 sector-specific questions pertaining to small appliances. Type II contains 25 sector-specific questions pertaining to medium and high-pressure appliances and Type III contains 25 sector-specific questions pertaining to low-pressure appliances.

EPA 608 Technician Certification Course - Type 1

Type 1 covers persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of small appliances and must be certified as Type I technicians. A small appliance is defined as a pre-assembled unit, hermetically sealed and factory-charged with 5 lbs. or less of refrigerant. Examples include equipment such as water coolers, window units, refrigerators, freezers, de-humidifiers, residential ice machines, and package terminal air conditioning. Split- systems are not included in Type I.

EPA 608 Technician Certification Course - Type 2

Type 2 covers persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of appliances containing more than 5 lbs. of refrigerant, or if the installation of such equipment requires refrigerant charging, must be certified as Type II technicians. Type II certification does not include small appliances or motor vehicle air-conditioning (MVAC) systems.

EPA 608 Technician Certification Course - Type 3

Type 3 covers persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of low-pressure appliances, such as centrifugals and chillers, and must be certified as Type III technicians. Low-pressure appliances operate with low-pressure refrigerants, which have pressures of 30 psig, or lower, at a liquid-phase temperature of 104°F. HCFC-123, used in chillers, is a “low-pressure refrigerant” under EPA’s Section 608 regulations to replace CFC-11.

How does this course work?
You can begin this online course instantly upon enrollment. This 6 module course is delivered entirely online. The lecture video and other materials are available any time. After successfully completing the course, you will be able to generate a certificate of completion.
Which certifications are included in this course?
This course covers ALL of the four types of EPA certification:
For servicing small appliances (Type I). For servicing or disposing of high- or very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and MVACs (Type II). For servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances (Type III). For servicing all types of equipment (Universal).
What if I fail one section of the exam but pass the others?
You only need to retake the sections of the exam that you didn't pass. You get credit for any sections that you pass.

What is a passing score on the EPA 608 Exam?
The EPA 608 Certification exam requires a minimum score of 72% per section or 84% for open-book format exams.
What if I don't pass the exam on my first try?
No problem - it happens. HeatSpring will pay for your first retake as part of our guarantee. Subsequent retakes will cost you $100.
How do I take the test?
There are three options for taking the EPA 608 test:
1 - You can submit payment ($125) for the EPA 608 Exam, then schedule a remote proctoring session to take it from your computer.

2 - If you prefer to take the exam through a different proctor, that is totally OK. You're not required to take the exam through us if you have a different option that you prefer.
