About this course

In this 32-minute video, Marc Rosenbaum walks you through calculations, architectural drawings, and construction details for a residential deep energy retrofit project: the Livermore House in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Marc says: "The purpose of performing the energy retrofit and renewable energy installations on the Livermore residence was primarily to demonstrate what can be done to reduce the carbon footprint of a suburban homeowner on a budget of approximately $50,000. The overall goal was to reduce the home's carbon footprint by 90%, and in doing so, to help others by changing the current paradigm of what is possible."

This video gave me a taste of HeatSpring's level of detail and innovation before signing up for a paid course. My wife and I just purchased a balloon-framed 1885 Queen Anne in southern Wisconsin, whose existing conditions (insulation, systems...) I will begin documenting as soon as we move in. As an Owner/Builder and green energy enthusiast, I'm eager to learn about conventional and unconventional (for 2023) options for decreasing our utility bill and carbon footprint while increasing year-round comfort in Climate Zone 6.

Excellent look at what you can do with an existing house in a cold climate. Lots of detail to ponder.

I love Mark's attention to detail, and even though this was a brief overview of a DE retrofit, he gave me confidence that I am in good training hands, for instance, in mentioning the flashing and critter guard details at the bottom of the exterior-mounted trusses. Thank you, Heatspring, for making this a freebie.
